Who We Are

Monj.ie is an independent, non-commercial information resource that compiles community-reported cost data related to prescription medicines supplied by licensed pharmacies in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Our aim is to provide greater transparency around variations in consultation and dispensing fees so that members of the public can better understand how these costs differ between providers.

All information listed on the site is drawn from publicly available sources and voluntary user submissions, and each entry includes a date indicating when it was last updated. We do not sell or supply medicines, offer medical advice, or make recommendations about treatment.

Why we include information about pharmacies

Across Ireland and the UK, pharmacies are regulated by professional bodies such as:

  • The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI)

  • The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) in Great Britain

  • The Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI)

These regulators maintain public registers that allow people to confirm that a pharmacy is licensed.

For safety reasons, it is always advisable to ensure that any provider you deal with is appropriately registered and operating within its regulatory framework.

Reports from health authorities in recent years have highlighted the presence of counterfeit medicines sold online through unregulated sources. Buying medicines only from licensed pharmacies helps reduce this risk.

Cross-Border Context

Ireland and Northern Ireland operate under different healthcare systems, pricing structures, and regulatory frameworks. While residents may access healthcare services in both jurisdictions, the cost and availability of prescription medicines can vary significantly between them.

Monj.ie includes community-reported pricing from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to reflect these real-world differences and help users understand the range of options available.

In practice, individuals can interact with providers across both jurisdictions (for example, consulting with an online prescriber, filling a prescription locally, or travelling to Northern Ireland for collection).

Northern Ireland-based pharmacies and providers operate under UK regulatory frameworks, and their processes (including prescription requirements and verification) can differ from those in Ireland.

In most cases, pharmacies in Northern Ireland can dispense prescriptions issued in the Republic of Ireland. However, acceptance is at the discretion of the pharmacy, and requirements can vary. For example, some pharmacies may require a paper (wet-ink) prescription, while others may only accept prescriptions issued through specific partnered providers or systems.

Pricing differences can be influenced by a number of factors, with VAT being one of the most significant. In the Republic of Ireland, injectable medications are subject to VAT (currently 23%), even when prescribed for legitimate medical conditions. In contrast, equivalent medications dispensed in Northern Ireland are typically exempt from VAT.

This difference alone can result in substantial variations in total cost between jurisdictions, alongside factors such as dispensing models and whether consultation and prescribing are included.

All information on this site is provided for general reference only. Pharmacy policies, prescription acceptance, pricing, VAT application, and availability can change, and may vary depending on location or delivery method. It is important to confirm details directly with the provider before making any decisions.

Understanding Costs

Consultation fees, dispensing charges, and other associated costs can differ between providers. Monj.ie compiles community-reported cost information to show a broad view of these variations.
Because fees may change, users should confirm exact costs with the provider directly.

We do not:

  • Recommend any provider

  • Suggest where a person should fill a prescription

  • Guarantee the accuracy of external pricing

  • Facilitate the purchase, supply, or use of medicines

Our purpose is limited to presenting general cost information shared by the public.
